Well, it is.
After weeks of considering how it would look like relaunching my website, on the same relaunch day, I decided to quit social media for the unforeseeable future.
The funny thing is, as I talked about it with Dave, I was like, “I don’t think I’ll miss anything.” Seriously. There’s nothing to miss.” Sure, there was that awesome Instagram account Underpants and Overbites that made me giggle and a few memes that added a little colour to my day. Other than that, there was nothing to miss. Nothing.
Social media, much like Instagram, is a snapshot of people living, creating and others just showing off really. And I let my love of memes and keeping up with people that are stacking cash with every like as they headline movies etc throw me off focus.
And no, the focus isn’t writing articles for my website. It’s working on at least one book every year.
Yep. A book every year.
Writing on the website is supposed to be a muscle building thing where I share but the gig is books. It’s a twoffer. I can have one without the other but I’d rather not.
I could have had this particular book over and done with 2 years ago had I not let my mind spin wondering what book I was to write in the first place. So I’m intentional this time with laser focus – words Dr. Mike Murdock (who follows me, talks with me when I reach out and shares a birthday with me – I apologize for the shameless fangirling) told me on our birthday in 2013.
To get something done, sometimes we have to change and stop doing what we’ve been doing and start doing something new.
Mine is shutting out social media and social media type content on Youtube (I’m talking about you too vlogs. Haha!)
And these words by Austin Kleon are my creation motto.
The good thing is that the process isn’t entirely new to me. I had gone pretty far with the book and had overcome some of the challenges eg: staring at a blank page. I know my writing rhythm and honestly, with the right focus I can hash this out in no time.
But I won’t get ahead of myself.
The first draft doesn’t have to be epic. It just has to exist.
Here’s to creating something worthwhile by the end of the year. I hope you will too so you can show me yours as I show you mine.
